Hong Kong Prizes and Awards

Hong Kong is no stranger to award ceremonies or prestigious accolades, from art to science, it has long been recognized for its innovative culture. But awards do not stop at just citywide recognition — its people excel at winning trophies for their efforts as well.

Since 1993, the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) have been given out, with winners selected by ballot from thirteen professional film bodies and an adjudication panel of 15 adjudicators. Voting on eligible films takes place annually between January and March and is open to both registered voters including local film workers as well as critics – making the HKFA one of the most prestigious events in Asia.

BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize 2023, launched in November to recognize scientific research that contributes to Hong Kong’s development, is another fine example. This competition covers five fields: Artificial Intelligence & Robotics; Life and Health; New Materials and New Energy; Advanced Manufacturing; FinTech. Submittals must have either been completed primarily within Hong Kong itself; conducted by scientists working at universities; industry-education-research bases or institutes set up by Hong Kong higher education institutions within Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area locations.

Recently announced by Generocity, the Hong Kong Global Development Prize offers people of Hong Kong an additional way to support international development efforts and shape its role on the world stage. Open to anyone with ideas for developing Hong Kong in a sustainable and inclusive manner, winners of this prize will receive a cash award of HK$5000 as well as have an opportunity to present them directly to key stakeholders within the development sector.

As well as these awards, the Hong Kong government provides many scholarships and grants for students who excel in certain disciplines. Scholarships may cover up to 80% of tuition fees as well as housing and living costs; thus providing enough funding for many students’ lives to change drastically.

Hari Art Prize is an annual Hong Kong art contest designed to give emerging artists an opportunity to win an impressive sum and establish themselves within their community. Open to self-taught and recent art graduate artists alike, with no restrictions placed on type or medium of artwork submitted; judges evaluate submissions based on creativity, originality and professionalism – for more information click here.
